Veterans Day is also celebrated as Remembrance Day and Armistice Day in France, Britain, Australia, Canada, and other countries of the world. The number 11 has very much significance with the Veterans Day. On November 11th at the 11th hour, World War I formally ended. And November is the 11th month of the year. When Veterans Day was celebrated as the Armistice Day, it was meant to pay homage to only those who died in World War I. But later in the 1940s, when it was amended as Veterans Day, it was changed to honor all those soldiers and veterans who have served in the US military.
There is a misconception among people that Veterans Day is the same as Memorial Day. But these two festivals are totally different from one other. The Memorial Day is celebrated to honor those who have died while serving the nation on the battlefield, whereas the Veterans Day is celebrated to honor all those who have served in the U.S. military, irrespective of deceased or alive.
Veterans Day is both a federal and state holiday in the United States of America.
A World War II veteran, Raymond Weeks first came up with the concept of honoring all the veterans on November 11th, not just the soldiers who had died in World War I. Later in 1982, Raymond Weeks received the Presidential Citizenship Medal from Ronald Reagan for his outstanding contribution to the Veterans Day celebration.
In 1971, the celebration was moved to the fourth Monday of October, but in 1978 Veterans Day again came back to its original day, which is 11th November. On Veterans Day, the National Veterans Award is given and the ritual started in 1954 in Alabama.
On November 11th, 1921 an American war hero was buried at Arlington Cemetery. The identity of that soldier is still unknown and thus his graveside is termed as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. From then, each year on Veterans Day, a ceremony is held in Arlington Cemetery to pay tribute to all who have died in the war.
